My drawing is inspired by "Perspective" by Wislawa Szymborska. In my opinion, the poem is about a broken couple, yet they are still in love with each other. As the man and the woman want to see each other as strangers, I color their faces black. The color black also indicates their feeling of emptiness and heartbroken when they are passing through each other. The woman and the man are “colorless” because they are in great torment after breaking up. They try to forget each other, but the old memories keep swirling in their mind. They have a flashback of their holding hands moment. The drawing of a rose symbolizes their love. I draw the woman and the man face to face because this moment hurts them the most. They know each other, but they don’t want to talk to each other. They are still in love with each other after breaking up, so the ignorance tears their heart into pieces. I integrate the quote “they passed like strangers” right under the holding hands because I want to show the woman’s and the man’s thoughts: They used to be lovers and now become strangers. I put the quote “perhaps startled or distracted, or forgetting” at the bottom of the picture to indicate the trying of forgetting memories. At the top, I quote “As if nothing had happened, if it had.” to refer to the poem title “Perspective”; “nothing had happened” is what outsiders think, but only the man and the woman know what had happened.
Any thoughts?
